I bought this for my son because at the age of 40 and the slow down in building of new homes he was out of work as an architect for almost 2 years. He decided to change careers, took the course and aced it and became a Tractor Trailer Driver. As a mother, you never stop worrying about the safety of your children and even though I know he is a good driver, the BIG rig made me nervous. He appreciated it but assured me he had already learned most of what's in the book; however, his three sons enjoyed checking it out and understanding what their dad is doing for a living now and my son says he enjoys having the book to peek at and review things he learned because as we age we can all do with a refresher course once in a while.
This book has alot of very valuable information, well wroth the money and this guy knows his stuff, my 1st year driving was rough especially the 1st 6 months but after buying his books and taking the time to read it carefully it has save me in alot of tight spots and jams
Currently I am in cdl school and this book as been a boon for me. I recommend getting this book and reading it in full. Next, pull up authors videos on YouTube and follow along in book as you review videos. The book is a must have for anyone in school,potential cdl student, or veteran cdl driver. I hope he updates the book with pictures in addition to the helpful simple to understand diagrams.
I thought this book very informative and well thought out.I think Jimmy Cox has done a great job on providing the novice and experienced driver with some solid advice particularly in the backing up of trailers, which is an artform in itself.I only wish that Jimmy would include with the book a DVD of his youtube videos AND an overlaid explanation of the formulas with distance and positioning markings on these, that aid would make this the definitive book for backing in my opinion and be 5 star all the way.I'd recommend it to all the young truckers that are finding it hard to wrap their heads around 'backing', it's a great help.
After reading the book I have a better understanding on setup and angling. I can backup knowing when to turn and not over steer all the time.
I bought this book for someone else, but, curious, cracked the cover...and then read straight through. It's straight-forward, practical, no-nonsense advice and tips from a seasoned knight of the road. I would like to see this book in the cab of every truck driver.I have been around trucks in the Military for many years,never drove OTR until I went to trucking school in 2008,I was on the road for thirty five days with a trainer.I had no problem driving the truck,after the first day out,I found myself driving as team verse as a trainee,in which their was little time for me to study my course on the road.My short fall was backing.I can alley dock,but in my mind I knew that backing was more than alley docking,once I received and read Mr Jim Cox book,it filled in the blank for me.I would say that from the book,I have gain a lot of knowledge on backing from this book.I feel that once I go back on the road I will be OK.I enjoy reading chapter 7,on attitude.I hope when I go back out on road,I will see a better ATTITUDE AMONG THE TRUCKER. I know that I am going to bring pride to the trucker on the road.Be your best all the time. The book is worth the money.Isaac
