McPherson ( Battle Cry of Freedom ), a Pulitzer Prize-winning Civil War scholar, here calls on letters and diaries, many unpublished, to present a strong case that both Union and Confederate soldiers made war motivated primarily by considerations of principle. Slavery was a crucial factor, he observes: Southerners regarded it as part of their way of life. Northerners, on the other hand, combined morality and pragmatism in their acceptance of abolition as essential in preserving the Union. McPherson, however, perceives the Civil War basically as a struggle for the heritage of 1776, a struggle in which Southerners sought freedom from a tyrannical government, while Northerners believed the republican experiment could not survive if the legitimacy of secession were established. More than 80% of the war's combatants were literate, which may help to explain why McPherson's sources convincingly reflect the character and experience of the armies. Frontline idealism seemed to prevail on both sides, perhaps to the surprise of a more cynical 20th century. McPherson's emphasis on moral and ideological factors in war gives his book a significance well beyond its specific subject.

Union general Joshua Chamberlain once observed that because they fought for rights rather than pay or plunder, Civil War armies were almost unique in history. Numerous studies of the Civil War, and subsequent wars, have argued otherwise, noting that self-interest and survival more than ideology caused men to fight. Now distinguished historian McPherson (American history, Princeton Univ.) has entered the lists after examining several hundred Union and Confederate soldiers' diaries and letters. In a sprightly and forcefully argued book, based on a series of lectures and derived from a larger work-in-progress, McPherson finds that soldiers on both sides cherished concepts of liberty (even when defending slavery). Many historians will likely contest such findings, which seem more to characterize the first years of the war than the last, but all will owe McPherson much for revitalizing an important debate about the meaning of the Civil War.

Nice tactical puzzle book. This book is a great book for anyone looking to get out of the 1200-1400 USCF level. I have many chess book and puzzles book and many of them are based on GM games. Which is nice, but coffee house chess where many are not GM dont make perfect moves and leave a lot of tactical possibilities if you can spot them. This book is based on weaker opponent games so there are tactical abilities in them that more likely to come up in your games if you play a lot of coffee shop chess. This book wont make you a GM or a 2000 rated player but can help you get to 1800 on a consistent level. What works well with this book is to go through it, it start off easy and the gets harder. Find the pages where you are finding them get difficult and mark that page. From that point on study about 300 and go back and do them again. Do them until you can solve the puzzles all 300 in half an hour. Repition is key once you do that then do another 300 and repeat. If you are stuck in the 1200-1400 level you will start to notice an improvement fast and you will spot them in your own games fast. Great book

I recently discovered another chess book, which may, in the end, prove one of the most beneficial in my Kindle chess library.It’s called “Progressive Tactics: 1002 Progressively Challenging Chess Tactics” by Dave Couture. The concept behind the book is simple but effective: Couture presents a series of chess problems of increasing complexity and difficulty for readers to study and analyze. On one page, the problem appears in a chess diagram with a simple instruction like: “White [or Black] to move,” with no other explanation. On the page following each problem, readers will find a diagram showing the best solution to the problem. There’s an arrow on the diagram showing the move, and a brief, easy-to-understand explanation for the move and why it is best.In his introduction, Dave Couture recommends using the book for about 15 to 20 minutes per day for a couple of months. He believes that readers who do this will begin to see an improvement in their overall chess playing skills automatically, “without making any special effort in… [their] games.” I’ve tried Couture’s suggestion, and it seems to work. In the same way Couture saw his chess Elo rating improve by about 10 percent from studying tactics, I have also seen my Elo rating increase by a similar amount (from about 1200) because of using his book.“Progressive Tactics” ranks among the better-formatted Kindle chess books I’ve found. The layout is simple. The diagrams are clear and colorful; however, they are a bit undersized for my 60-plus year-old eyes. This is a minor complaint that I hope Couture will address in future editions. Increasing the size of the diagrams – by even a moderate amount – in Kindle editions would be a great benefit to readers (like me) with less than perfect vision.I think “Progressive Tactics” is one of the best, most useful “Kindle-ized” chess books I’ve found in a long time. Highly recommended. (4½ Stars ^ 5)

I bought the Kindle edition. The formatting for this book is great. A diagram on one page, followed by the diagram showing the solution on the next page.The diagrams look great on my iPad.I hope that other chess books will use this as a pattern for their Kindle editions.I have only done a few of the puzzles so far. They are taken from real games and seem practical.The price is great.

I really like this book with one caveat. It has the same flaw that all such books have. You know that there is a tactic in the position. This is different from a chess game. There you don't get forewarned that a tactic is lurking in the position.But as a book to use for warming up and learning chess tactics this book is excellent. It is on the same level as Tim Brennan's stuff and as such should help improve your chess.I think the idea of going over the puzzles several times is very applicable to this type of book.

A collection of chess puzzles selected from the author's own games. They progress from trivial to very hard, which is useful for assessing your level of tactical ability as well as providing at least a few hundred puzzles for any level player between about 800 and 1500 rating. The feature that I liked the most was that the objective in each puzzle is not stated, rather left as part of the problem as it would be in an actual game. Most mid-level players may find this feature eye-opening as we often forget to search for tactics in a position. The book is well-edited but I found the commentary to be a bit thin at times.

This is one of the best chess ebooks I have bought. I love the nice big board images and that you touch the screen once for the answer and explanation - as opposed to many other chess ebooks where you have to skip to the last chapter to find the answer, which is very annoying and unwieldy, and in doing so you can't help seeing the answer to the next problem! Highly recommend this one.

But I love it. Every time I have a spare moment I pop up this book and solve a couple of tactical problems. It is really helping, too. My rating for solving tactical problems on Lichess has jumped to over 2000.

This is a great book for learning tactics. In addition to a well-graded set of problems from real games, the format is well thought out with a single problem or solution to a page on a Kindle device. The diagrams are clear and the solutions are helpful. On the Kindle cloud app the problem-per-page layout is bit broken, but this is the fault of the cloud app. A lot of the time I find this book much more convenient than online tactics training (ChessTempo) or one of the large paperbacks such as Polgar's Chess Tactics for Champions.
